There are numerous things a person can find in a dictionary. The first and obvious things in a dictionary that people think of are definitions.
WHAT WILL I FIND IN MY DICTIONARY:
-How to spell the word and its special plural form
-Whether or not the word is capitalized or abbreviated
-How to pronounce the word
-The part of speech of a word (verb, noun, adj, etc)
-Different meanings that the word has, as well as synonyms (same meaning) and antonyms (opposite meaning)
-A sentence or expression with the word used correctly
-The meanings of important prefixes and suffixes
-Other words derived from the main word
HOW TO USE MY DICTIONARY:
-The words are all in alphabetic order.
-Words sometimes have more than one definition. (Example: jail)
-Learn the phonetic alphabet, this tells you how to pronounce the phonetic symbols given with each word. (Example: Fight)
-Learn how to use the stress marks. Most English dictionaries show where the stress of a word is by using the mark. (Example: photograph)
-Words are printed in large bold type at the upper top left-hand and right-hand corner of any page. The first of these two words show you which is the first word on that page, the second shows you which is the last word on that page.
